Job Overview:

Under the guidance of the Zoonotic Disease Branch Manager and in collaboration with the Medical Parasitology Team Lead, the Senior Microbiologist conducts advanced laboratory analyses on various specimens including stool, blood, urine, and tissue, focusing on the isolation and identification of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms.

As the senior Microbiologist, this role includes assuming Team Lead responsibilities when necessary. The individual will oversee daily operations, assist in prioritizing tasks, and address workload challenges. This position also involves developing and facilitating training programs for team members, interns, and students, while maintaining the digital imaging library and training resources.

Collaboration with the Team Lead is essential to ensure adherence to quality assurance (QA) protocols. The Senior Microbiologist will perform and document quality control (QC) procedures, conduct preventive maintenance on equipment, and troubleshoot instruments as needed.

Additionally, this role includes conducting process improvement initiatives and validation studies for new or modified procedures, while formulating and adapting protocols for implementation. Other responsibilities will be assigned as necessary, requiring a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, initiative, and judgment.


Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance and adherence to agency policies are required, along with the performance of additional assigned duties.

  1. Detection of Parasitic Infections: Conduct microscopic examinations of specimens to identify parasitic infections. This includes initial specimen processing, examination for parasites, and entering results into the laboratory information system.
  2. Quality Assurance Coordination: Work closely with the Team Lead to ensure QA measures are effectively implemented and documented. Perform QC procedures and assist in troubleshooting equipment and diagnostic tests.
  3. Training and Mentorship: Provide training to technical staff in parasitological identification and specimen processing. Prepare training materials and assist in workshops and educational presentations.
  4. Team Leadership: Serve as the senior Microbiologist, assisting the Team Lead in daily operations, work assignments, and ensuring timely report issuance.
  5. Research and Development: Conduct process improvement studies and maintain thorough documentation of validations. Engage in continuous education to stay updated on microbiological techniques.
  6. Compliance and Support: Ensure compliance with laboratory guidelines and assist with special projects to maintain high productivity and quality standards.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

In-depth knowledge of parasitology and specimen processing techniques, along with an understanding of the epidemiology of parasitic diseases. Proficiency in microscopy and molecular applications for detecting infectious agents is essential. The ability to work independently, make informed technical decisions, and effectively communicate with clients and staff is crucial for success in this role.
