Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Microbiologist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for conducting complex laboratory analysis, training technical staff, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of our test results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Laboratory Analysis: Conduct complex laboratory analysis on stool, blood, urine, and tissue specimens, isolating and identifying both pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms.
  • Train Technical Staff: Train technical staff in parasitological identification and specimen processing, and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Ensure Quality and Accuracy: Ensure the quality and accuracy of test results, and participate in proficiency testing and quality control procedures.
  • Collaborate with Team Lead: Collaborate with the Team Lead to prioritize work assignments, resolve workload problems, and ensure that reports are issued in a timely manner.
  • Conduct Process Improvement: Conduct process improvement and validation studies of new or modified procedures, and make recommendations for improvement or replacement.
Requirements
  • Practical Knowledge of Parasitology: Practical knowledge of parasitology, including procedures used in processing various types of specimens for parasitological examination and the specific criteria used for identifying the parasites of humans.
  • Understanding of Epidemiology: Understanding of the epidemiology of parasitic diseases, and of host-parasite relationships.
  • Skilled in Microscopy: Skilled and proficient in compound light and dissecting microscopy; morphological identification of parasitic protozoa, use of taxonomic keys to identify helminths.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance: Knowledge of quality assurance functions and material management procedures.
  • Ability to Work Independently: Ability to work independently and make technical decisions based on professional knowledge and experience.
