Job Title: Registered Nurse 1

Join the State of New York team as a Registered Nurse 1 and make a difference in the lives of individuals served by the program. As a key member of the healthcare team, you will provide professional nursing services, including nursing interventions, case finding, health teaching, and supportive care.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitor individuals' medical and health needs, providing timely interventions and documentation.
  • Collaborate with primary care physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Advocate for individuals' healthcare needs, promoting autonomy and self-advocacy.
  • Support residential staff in maintaining health services for individuals, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Utilize reporting mechanisms and chain of command to address individual and staff issues.
  • Complete follow-up documentation for individuals post-ER/hospital visit, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Review, comment, and date lab, x-ray, and consult results, completing follow-up with practitioners as needed.
  • Provide necessary documentation regarding home visits within established time frames.
  • Follow pressure wound policy and documentation requirements.
  • Provide nursing services and support to residential/day hab staff, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Respond to emergency requests in a timely manner, prioritizing individual and staff needs.
  • Complete nursing assessments and related documentation, ensuring thoroughness and timeliness.
  • Provide individual-specific nursing interventions, promoting health and well-being.
  • Respond to staff questions regarding individual-specific medical and nursing issues.
  • Ensure PONS are current and signed by staff, maintaining accurate records.
  • Provide health-related training and consultation to day program, IES, and residential staff.
  • Annually review medical section ISP, medication audit, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes.
  • Obtain informed consent for medications, adhering to BDDSOO policy.
  • Provide nursing assessment and supervision of DSAs competency regarding individual-specific nursing delegated procedures, including medication administration.
  • Complete initial medication certification and annual clinical performance evaluations for DSAs.
  • Provide training for staff on new/revised medication/policies.
  • Provide CMHN, NA, and NPC with certification/recertification information for database in a timely manner.
  • Complete required medication error documentation and staff medication error remediation.
  • Provide clinical supervision to LPNs, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Provide adequate nursing supervision and complete performance evaluations regarding individual-specific nursing procedures.
  • Maintain professional skills, attending Nursing Discipline meetings and online mandated DDSO training.
  • Identify problems and opportunities for personal and/or nursing department improvement, contributing to action plans.
  • Complete special projects/assignments.

Additional Information:

The posted hiring salary includes the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 18, along with special salary treatments in effect for this position in this location. The posted maximum salary includes the Downstate Adjustment and Geographic Differential.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, requiring meeting minimum qualifications but not taking an exam.

Employees hired under NY HELPS will be first appointed as temporary employees, with a permanent non-competitive appointment in June 2024 if performing successfully. Once in permanent status, the official probationary period will begin, and employees may take any promotion exam for which they are qualified.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status, without needing to take an exam.

Local Bidding Agreements will be honored, and preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures.

All OPWDD employees must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, with continued employment dependent on maintaining eligibility.

Employees on long-term leave can bid on positions but must be able to report to work within fourteen (14) days and perform the essential functions of their positions with or without reasonable accommodation.
