Position Overview

The Merchandise Operations Manager is accountable for the effective execution of operations within the Pet Care Center, aligning with Petco's mission of promoting healthier pets, happier people, and a better world.

This role focuses on ensuring that all merchandising and inventory management operations are conducted efficiently and effectively within the Pet Care Center.

The manager guarantees that all merchandise is received, priced, stocked, and that the backroom is organized according to operational standards. They are instrumental in achieving the established goals and metrics set by Petco.

Key Responsibilities

Utilize business insight to assess, analyze, and diagnose business trends while employing critical thinking skills to implement improvement strategies.

Support the execution of Inventory Management by training and coaching team members on key areas such as shrink management, cycle counts, receiving, and returns.

Facilitate the implementation of Merchandising Management, ensuring adherence to brand standards, pricing accuracy, planogram compliance, and promotional setups through effective training and coaching.

Process transactions at the register to enhance the customer experience and support guest interactions as necessary.

Oversee the execution of Omni Channel initiatives, including buy online pick up in store (BOPUS), ship-from-store, curbside service, and overall guest experience through training and coaching.

Ensure the health and welfare of all animals in accordance with established policies, including conducting hourly wellness checks.

Adhere to and promote safety protocols, maintaining a clean and healthy environment for team members, guests, and animals, while following veterinary protocols for sick animals.

Maintain an organized backroom and equipment according to Operating Standards of Excellence, performing routine housekeeping tasks to uphold store appearance.

Train and develop team members on proper receiving, processing, and stocking procedures, including food rotation practices.

Implement all company policies and procedures, particularly those aimed at minimizing shrink, and ensure compliance with Return to Vendor and Hazardous Waste management protocols.

Responsible for opening and closing the store in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Act as the Leader on Duty, supporting guest experiences, Pet Care Center operations, training, communication, and compliance with company initiatives and safety practices.

Foster a positive leadership culture that emphasizes teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required; some college-level business or management coursework is preferred.

At least one year of management experience is required, with two or more years preferred.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills are essential, including proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other relevant applications.

Demonstrated ability in general business practices, finance acumen, analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong focus on guest service and team development.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Merchandise Operations Manager directly supervises Operations Specialists and Generalists, ensuring exceptional service is provided to all guests.

Maintain high merchandising standards throughout the Pet Care Center and ensure compliance with attendance processes in collaboration with Pet Care Center leaders.

This role requires availability during key operational hours, including weekends.

While most tasks are performed indoors, occasional responsibilities may require brief outdoor activities such as merchandise stocking and customer carry-outs.

Physical requirements include bending, kneeling, lifting merchandise (up to 50 pounds), and standing for extended periods, necessitating adherence to safety protocols.

Contacts

This position involves continuous interaction with the public at the Pet Care Center and regular communication with other departments, distribution centers, and support centers.

External contacts may be necessary for coordinating merchandise returns, ordering parts, and managing Pet Care Center events.
