KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that roadway designs effectively prioritize bus services by collaborating with local Department of Transportation (DOT) agencies to advocate for the integration of bus priority measures into roadway designs and identifying enhancements for bus stop locations and configurations.
  • Oversees the management of bus stops and associated signage, guaranteeing that their locations, signage, and designs adhere to established standards while promoting safe and efficient operations.
  • Advances improvements in bus stop locations and designs, including coordination with external agencies to enhance accessibility features in compliance with ADA standards.
  • Collaborates with internal departments to ensure timely replacement of missing or damaged signage and addresses feedback regarding bus stops from various stakeholders.
  • Coordinates efforts related to bus priority initiatives.
  • Manages the Bus Priority Zones project, working with internal teams, external agencies, and consultants to identify and implement bus priority measures on critical routes to mitigate delays.
  • Supports other agency initiatives aimed at enhancing bus priority, including corridor-level improvements, transit signal priority, and queue jump signal implementations.
  • Identifies external projects that present opportunities for enhancements to bus-related infrastructure and seeks grant funding to support these initiatives.
  • Develops policies and standards concerning bus stop and roadway design, as well as bus priority elements, to ensure the safe, rapid, and efficient operation of transit services.
  • Utilizes and manages various data sources to support the responsibilities outlined above, including ridership data, geospatial data on bus stops and infrastructure, and metrics related to bus speed and utilization.
  • Supervises staff, coordinating their efforts to support the responsibilities mentioned and fostering skill development to align with agency objectives.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, developing, monitoring, and evaluating staff performance, as well as recommending personnel actions.
  • Conducts fieldwork related to the above activities and performs additional duties as assigned.

MANAGEMENT DUTIES

This position oversees the following roles:

CHALLENGES

  • Enhancing bus operations on roadways managed by external DOTs.
  • Coordinating efforts across multiple internal and external stakeholders to achieve objectives while addressing community needs through collaboration with elected officials.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience relevant to this position.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Requires prolonged periods of remaining stationary and constant operation of office equipment.
  • Employees must reside within the designated service area within a specified timeframe after employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • General understanding of urban street design principles and transit priority infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with transit operations, planning, and basic scheduling principles.
  • Knowledge of the service area geography and the CTA rail and bus systems.
  • Ability to interpret roadway design plans, comprehend construction budgets and schedules, and analyze statistical data.
  • Capability to collaborate across various disciplines and coordinate efforts among internal and external groups.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power BI, and ArcGIS software.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Typical office setting.
  • Fieldwork may be necessary to assess roadway and bus stop conditions.
  • May require working extended or irregular hours to meet project deadlines.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS USED

  • Non-revenue vehicles operated by the CTA.
