Position Overview: The City of Ventura is currently seeking applications for the role of Law Enforcement Officer. This position is open to both experienced lateral candidates and those who have completed an academy training program.

Key Responsibilities: Law Enforcement Officers operate under general oversight and are responsible for a variety of essential duties including law enforcement, criminal investigations, crime prevention, and traffic management.

Officers may also engage in specialized roles such as motorcycle patrol, K-9 units, major crime investigations, special investigations, SWAT operations, and tactical field units.

This role requires wearing a uniform and entails working on a rotating schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, with the possibility of being called back to duty.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should possess a combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to a high school diploma. Coursework in behavioral or social sciences, criminal justice, or related fields is preferred.

For Lateral Applicants: Candidates must hold a California POST Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Certificate and have at least one year of experience as a Law Enforcement Officer with a California agency.

For Academy-Trained Applicants: Candidates must have successfully completed a California POST Certified Basic Academy.

For Academy-in-Process Applicants: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a California POST Certified Basic Academy program and be within three months of graduation.

Licensing Requirements: A valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are mandatory at the time of hire.

Certification: Possession of a California POST "Basic" certificate is required upon hiring.

Selection Process: Candidates will undergo a selection process that includes interviews, physical agility assessments, polygraph testing, background investigations, and post-offer psychological and medical evaluations.

Physical Agility Assessment Components: Candidates will be evaluated on various physical tasks, including:

  • Agility Run: Navigate a 99-yard course with sudden lateral and vertical movements.
  • Dummy Drag: Lift and pull a 165-pound dummy over a distance of 21 feet.
  • Fence Climb/Run: Scale a six-foot high chain-link fence and continue running.
  • 500 Yard Run: Complete a 500-yard run without obstacles.
