Position: Senior Design Coordinator

Overview: All candidates must possess a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or comparable public sector projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, organize, and direct the design initiatives for the School Upgrade Program and essential repair projects. Act as the principal design professional within the Design Department, ensuring quality assurance, policy implementation, and coordination with the Division of State Architects (DSA).
  • Manage and coordinate the design workflow for the Facilities Planning and Development Division, ensuring compliance with functional program, budgetary constraints, environmental considerations, and legal obligations.
  • Lead multiple projects by collaborating with architects, consultants, and management personnel from initial concept through drafting, final review, approval, and transition to Project Execution.
  • Supervise the building design process to guarantee adherence to standards and guidelines, working closely with design professionals and administrators to ensure that new and renovated structures meet educational and building code requirements.
  • Establish and implement a systematic approach to identify and select the architectural firm best suited for each project based on qualifications and performance capabilities.
  • Provide architects with clear and consistent guidance regarding project goals, objectives, standards, site specifications, schedules, and budgets.
  • Develop and maintain an effective design review process to ensure that designs align with overall project goals, deliver maximum value for budgeted funds, and meet the functional needs of the District and local community.
  • Ensure timely decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of all project steps to meet legal standards.
  • Review proposed design changes to ensure adherence to budget constraints.
  • Recommend architectural firm assignments from a pre-qualified list of firms.
  • Engage in community relations and outreach initiatives to foster understanding and acceptance of District building project designs.
  • Coordinate with various professional staff supporting the District's design functions.
  • Facilitate continuing education opportunities, such as seminars and workshops, to share and acquire up-to-date knowledge on collaboration with architects and contractors.
  • Coordinate project activities with other branches and departments within the District, including Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, and others.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Experience:

  • At least 10 years of full-time professional experience in managing facilities design or coordinating capital projects, encompassing overall design, contract administration, cost estimation, and scheduling.
  • A minimum of 5 years of this experience must involve the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public sector projects.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • A valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or as a Professional Engineer by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
