Position Summary
As a Battery/Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Engineer, you will play a vital role within BakerRisk's Low Carbon Energy (LCE) Risk Management group, spearheading projects focused on battery safety. This position involves supporting existing battery-related services and contributing to the development of innovative service areas that align with the latest advancements in battery technology and safety challenges. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the testing team on comprehensive battery evaluations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) for BESS in compliance with NFPA 855.
  • Execute Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) and establish fire protection design criteria for BESS and electric vehicle battery manufacturing facilities.
  • Formulate fire protection strategies for large-scale BESS projects.
  • Utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools for fire modeling and smoke analysis related to battery applications.
  • Assist clients with the permitting and inspection processes for BESS by collaborating with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Support the BakerRisk Testing team in planning, executing, and gathering data from large-scale battery fire tests in accordance with UL 9540A and other relevant standards.
  • Analyze data from battery tests, communicate findings to the team, and propose new testing pathways.
  • Develop relationships with new battery clients, participate in industry conferences, and assist in business development initiatives.
  • Provide training to team members on battery-related topics.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (required) or Master's degree (preferred) in an engineering discipline (e.g., fire protection, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, or mechanical engineering).
  • A minimum of 6 years of professional experience in the battery sector.
  • Strong understanding of battery fundamentals and familiarity with battery testing equipment and procedures.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, documentation, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with abuse testing at the cell/module/pack levels and knowledge of safety testing standards such as UN 38.3, SAE 2464, and RTCA DO-311.
  • Familiarity with code compliance reviews related to battery safety, including standards such as UL9540/9540A, EN standards for fire and intrusion alarm systems, and DIN standards for fire detection systems.
Professional Development
  • Progress towards or possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant certifications.
  • Engagement in professional and technical societies.
  • Publication of research papers and articles.
