Position: Nursing Care Assistant I/Health Unit Coordinator - Ortho Med. Surg. Stepdown Nights
Schedule: 7pm - 7am for 3 shifts weekly. A $5,000 commitment bonus is available for eligible candidates.

Department Overview:


The Orthopedics unit (NP3200) at Duke Raleigh Hospital features over 40 beds, specializing in Orthopedics and Med-Surg Intermediate/Stepdown care.

Job Summary:


The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a vital support partner to the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), performing tasks as delegated by the RN or LPN.

The NA provides direct patient care and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination.

The individual in this role is expected to uphold basic care and comfort standards while being knowledgeable about the needs of the patient population in their assigned area.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures, providing manual assistance as needed.

2. Collect and document patient data for medical records, promptly informing the RN/LPN of any relevant information.


3. Administer personal care procedures to patients, including feeding, bathing, grooming, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, assisting with mobility, and other necessary care to ensure patient comfort.


4. Participate in educational activities by reinforcing instructions provided by the RN and/or healthcare providers as needed.

5. Assist healthcare providers and nurses during physical examinations by positioning patients, changing non-sterile dressings, and weighing patients.

6. Record vital signs, monitor intake and output, and apply ice packs. Report any changes in the patient's condition.

7. Conduct fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriate training, and document findings while notifying the RN/LPN.

8. Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transportation, adhering to standard precautions and utilizing personal protective equipment as required.

9. Collect, deliver, and perform routine tests on patient specimens. Maintain cleanliness in assigned areas; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as necessary.

10. Engage in professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational sessions. Support the growth of other staff and learners.

11. May perform clean dressing changes for wounds older than 48 hours.

12. Carry out various clerical tasks related to the organization's patient care information system.

13. Assemble and maintain patient charts from admission to discharge. Prepare and upload paper documents into the electronic medical record (EMR).

14. Navigate the electronic medical record system to access patient information, generate reports, schedule appointments, and manage task lists.

15. Assign nursing staff to communication systems.

16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:


Completion of a Level I - Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC-approved Nurse Aide I competency test.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Licensure and Certification:


Must be currently listed as a Nursing Assistant (NA I) with the Division of Facility Services, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect, or misappropriation of property.


BCLS certification must be obtained by the end of new hire orientation, typically occurring during the first week of employment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Familiarity with procedures and techniques for administering routine and specialized treatments to patients.

- Understanding of sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions applicable in a hospital setting.

- Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety measures.

- Ability to endure prolonged periods of standing and walking.

- Capacity to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.

- Proficiency in documenting and communicating relevant information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff.

Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
