Job Summary

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Paralegal Casehandler for the Bronx Housing Justice - Tenant Defense Unit. The Paralegal Casehandler works on their own cases as well as with the Housing Staff Attorneys to resolve benefits and advocacy issues, including but not limited to obtaining rent arrears and ongoing rental assistance through appropriate programs, agency advocacy, representation of clients at administrative hearings, and outreach and training for affected client communities and service providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts intake, client interviews, provides advice and direct assistance, and assesses requests for services
  • Represents clients at administrative hearings at HRA or other appropriate forums
  • Works with Staff Attorneys to resolve the benefits issues involved with housing practice cases
  • Obtains rent arrears and ongoing rental assistance through FHEPS and other programs
  • Handles a high volume of individual cases and responds to the needs of community-based organizations
  • Prepares motion documents, including client affidavits
  • Conducts advocacy in eviction cases and termination hearings
  • Develops community education materials and conducts trainings for clients and other advocates
  • Maintains case records
  • Conducts courthouse-based and offsite intake as needed, including during evening hours
  • Conducts policy advocacy on behalf of clients
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program
  • Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage a large workload
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and immigrants is strongly desired
  • Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable, but not required
  • Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Spanish, is desirable, but not required

Salary Transparency

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range/ Salary: $57,687 to $83,218
