About the Role

The Bronx Defenders is seeking a passionate and dedicated Staff Attorney to join our Civil Action Practice, focusing on housing justice and advancing our Right to Counsel in Housing Court work.

As a Staff Attorney, you will advise, support, and defend individuals navigating proceedings related to eviction, termination, barriers to obtaining housing, and other housing-related proceedings. You will also staff Housing Court intake to provide representation to tenants in Housing Court, advise and represent individuals in intake with housing-related issues, and represent individuals in negotiations, administrative, and judicial proceedings and trials.

You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including immigration, criminal, and family defense attorneys, advocates, benefits advisors, and social workers to assess and address housing needs of the people we represent and the Bronx community. Additionally, you will participate in community training and public education, enter and maintain accurate client data and files, and help identify systemic problems that affect the people we represent while thinking creatively about new strategies and solutions for systemic change.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • J.D. and eligibility to practice in New York or ability to sit for the New York State Bar Exam
  • Commitment to challenging systemic injustice and defending people ensnared in the housing legal system
  • Experience working in and with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically marginalized communities
  • Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong verbal and written advocacy skills
  • Strong legal analytical skills and capacity to explore non-legal resources and solutions
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team
