Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician - Core Lab - Evenings/Nights

We are seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team in the Core Lab department, working evening and night shifts. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in performing and interpreting routine diagnostic procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunology.

  • Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures: knows personal role in case of a fire.
  • Maintains membership and active participation in ASCP as a registered Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Understands and follows all departmental policies and procedures.
  • Exhibits a thorough knowledge of safety requirements in the laboratory as well as special requirements in the designated area of responsibility.
  • Assesses and re-assigns workload in order to comply with emergency or critical request requirements.
  • Communicates with other shifts regarding departmental work.
  • Performs routine and stat procedures according to laboratory specifications as described in procedure manuals; performs repeat testing when results are questionable.
  • Collects patient specimens using age-specific criteria when needed and correctly labels and initials.
  • Performs procedures within the stated turn-around time at least 95% of the time.
  • Calls stat or critical values according to current laboratory policy.
  • Enter results into computer system within 1 hour of test completion with a minimum of 99% accuracy.
  • Performs and interprets diagnostic procedures; performs repeat tests when results are questionable.
  • Judges adequacy of submitted specimens.
  • Is familiar with reference ranges, knows expected deviations from normal, and acts according to prescribed procedures. Investigates possible causes for abnormal results.
  • Performs and results quality control as required and reports corrective action in maintenance logs for Quality Control problems 100% of the time.
  • Ensures that quality control criteria are met before patient's reports are accepted.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and reports in writing if instruments not functioning properly.
  • Applies problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills to identify problems affecting instruments, techniques, or other components.
  • Is familiar with and helps comply with QA standards and indicators.
  • Assures and demonstrates compliance with regulations established by accrediting bodies through successful participation in CAP and other inspection entities.
  • Maintains and achieves departmental competency in bench skills with annual assessment by Section Manager with completion of annual packets for each department as appropriate.
  • Practices cost-saving procedures commensurate with maintaining quality standards.
  • Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings.
  • Assists with evaluation of new or modified techniques.
  • Assists in training new employees.
  • Assists with student interns and student tours of the laboratory.
  • Evaluates and restocks supplies as depleted, alerts manager when necessary.
  • Cleans countertops a minimum of once per shift or as required to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
  • Exhibits and demonstrates a thorough understanding of test procedures in the designated departmental area.
  • Maintains proficiency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting all automated equipment in the designated departmental area.
  • Successfully participates in CAP surveys.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings to stay informed of continual changes in the laboratory.
  • Assumes charge role duties in the absence of Section Manager when appropriate.
  • Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements and reports to Education Department for tracking.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Near-visual acuity with color vision in order to detect color changes of specimens and stains used on specimens.
  • Ability to be on feet for a long periods of time.
  • Form perception required to notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in a well-ventilated, indoor laboratory environment. Possible exposure to patients with infectious diseases and/or to bodily fluids which may contain infectious agents.

Reporting Structure:

Reports to Section Manager; in his/her absence, reports to the Administrative Director of Pathology.

Establishes and maintains working relationships with other technical and clerical staff, medical staff, nursing staff, other departments of the hospital, with patients and visitors.

Qualifications and Standards:
  • Education:
  • Meets educational requirements set forth by ASCP for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Associate degree preferred.
  • Experience:
  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
  • Certifications/Licensure:
  • Registered or registry eligible as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the Registry Board of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • Must achieve registered status within one year of employment.
