Merritt Island, Florida, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we aspire to enable a future where millions thrive in space, contributing to the well-being of our planet. Our mission focuses on the creation of reusable, secure, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a framework that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and inclusivity.

This position is integral to the Lunar Transportation division, responsible for the advancement of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander series. To fulfill our vision of a sustainable presence in space, we are establishing reliable infrastructure for transporting personnel and cargo from Earth to the lunar environment.

As a key member of a diverse and dedicated engineering team, you will play a vital role in defining and developing thermal control systems for spacecraft. You should thrive in a dynamic and often unpredictable setting, where innovative solutions are essential, and where personal leadership, technical expertise, and meticulous attention to detail are paramount.

This opportunity is for a Thermal Analysis Manager within the Thermal Integrated Product Team (Thermal IPT) of the Lunar Transportation division. The selected candidate will oversee either the Component-level or System-level Thermal Analysis teams within the Thermal Analysis group. Approximately 20-30% of your responsibilities will involve personnel management (including hiring, performance assessments, and mentoring), while the remaining 70-80% will focus on high-level thermal analysis as an individual contributor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Component-level or System-level Thermal Analysis teams, ensuring effective personnel management, including performance evaluations and training.
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage a diverse and inclusive team.
  • Facilitate the professional growth of your team members through coaching and regular development discussions.
  • Ensure the delivery and quality of thermal analysis for various spacecraft systems/components, coordinating the efforts of multiple analysts.
  • Develop thermal models using Thermal Desktop (for system-level) or ANSYS Icepak (for component-level) based on inputs from external teams.
  • Forecast temperatures of spacecraft and components throughout all mission phases.
  • Identify and resolve any discrepancies with thermal requirements.
  • Conduct trade studies and optimize thermal design solutions while collaborating with external teams on trade-offs.
  • Document thermal analysis findings and present them during program reviews.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Over 5 years of relevant experience in thermal analysis, specifically with Thermal Desktop or ANSYS Icepak.
  • In-depth understanding of heat transfer principles in space environments.
  • Strong knowledge of standard spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Proven ability to build trust and maintain professional relationships, contributing to an inclusive culture.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing technical teams or leading functional groups.
  • More than 8 years of experience in thermal analysis for spacecraft systems.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware and semi-passive devices.
  • Familiarity with agile project management methodologies.
  • Knowledge of thermal environments associated with lunar missions.
  • Experience with safety-critical aerospace vehicle certification processes.

Compensation:

Compensation for this role varies by location and experience.

Inclusivity Statement:

We value diversity and encourage individuals to apply even if they do not meet every qualification listed. Your unique experiences may align perfectly with our needs.

Benefits:

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, and a 401(k) plan with company matching.

Paid Time Off includes up to four weeks per year, plus company-paid holidays.

Discretionary bonuses are available to reward individual contributions and share in company success.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

Blue Origin is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, providing equal opportunities for all qualified applicants regardless of race, gender, or other protected characteristics.
