Job Description

At William Newton Memorial Hospital, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Operating Officer to oversee the overall operations and administration of our hospitalist program and hospital clinics. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the effective management of our hospital's objectives, established by the Hospital Board of Trustees and/or Administration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement programs, policies, and procedures to assess, evaluate, and meet the needs of our patients.
  • Oversee the implementation of standards of practice, annually reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in clinic operations.
  • Address and support cultural practices that do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy.
  • Ensure clear, concise, and current written policies and procedures are available to assist staff and minimize risk factors.
  • Recommend modifications, additions, or deletions of personnel policies to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide patient care coverage.
  • Initiate and participate in problem-solving, policy-forming meetings for clinic and hospitalist care services, maintaining close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services.
  • Oversee all aspects of patient care within the clinic setting, optimizing patient safety and reducing the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Participate with the Hospital Board, management, medical staff, and clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making process.
  • Plan and recommend new facilities or equipment or modifications thereto needed to provide patient care.
  • Serve as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care.
  • Participate in Hospital Board, Management Team, departmental, and various medical staff meetings.
  • Plan and coordinate with the Chief Financial Officer, utilizing departmental supervisors for planning budgeting requirements for personnel, performance of work, supplies, and equipment.
  • Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets.
  • Implement an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of hospital clinic and hospitalist program services delivered to patients.
  • Each clinic's performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the Mission and Vision of WNH.
  • The results of each department's performance improvement activities are reported to the respective medical staff committees and to the hospital-wide performance improvement committee.
  • Assure that clinic leaders and hospitalists review monthly performance improvement compliance with established indicators and see that corrective actions are taken when negative outcomes are identified.
  • Collaborate with hospital leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising, and monitoring hospital-wide performance improvement activities.

Requirements:

  • Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Complete annual education requirements.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and CMS regulations.
  • Maintain and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wear identification while on duty.
  • Perform department in-services.
  • Work at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.
  • Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Attend committee, CQI, and management meetings, as appropriate.
  • Resolve personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
  • Effectively and consistently communicate administrative directives to personnel and encourage interactive departmental meetings and discussion.
  • Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicate the mission, vision, and core values of the hospital.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, or Business preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years prior experience in healthcare required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years director-level, or above, experience required.
