Position Overview

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in delivering legal guidance and support in the realm of environmental law, ensuring compliance and managing legal challenges effectively. This role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities related to environmental legal matters, including negotiations, permit advisory, due diligence assessments, legal research, and providing counsel to management and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Practice Areas: Focus on various environmental regulations such as air quality standards (CAA), Superfund regulations (CERCLA), waste management laws (RCRA), water quality regulations (CWA), chemical safety laws (TSCA), pipeline safety regulations (PHMSA), railroad safety laws (FRA), product safety regulations (FDA), and occupational safety regulations (OSHA), along with their state equivalents.
  • Regulatory Updates: Advise leadership on significant changes in environmental legislation and regulations impacting the organization, and facilitate the implementation of necessary adjustments.
  • External Legal Support: Efficiently manage and coordinate the services of external legal advisors as needed to supplement internal legal capabilities.
  • Claims Management: Proactively address and negotiate pre-litigation environmental claims in collaboration with site teams and business leaders.
  • Litigation Oversight: Assess and manage litigation risks associated with the organization, providing specialized knowledge and expertise on assigned cases.
  • Government Affairs Support: Collaborate with the government affairs team to monitor and coordinate on federal and state legislative and regulatory developments in environmental and safety sectors.
  • Training Initiatives: Develop and deliver training programs covering all aspects of environmental, health, and safety law.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, preferably Texas.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in-house or at a law firm, specifically in environmental law, with the capability to independently manage complex legal issues.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across all organizational levels.
  • Experience in a multinational, multicultural manufacturing environment is advantageous.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously while managing multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10-15% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the chemical or energy sectors is preferred.
