The Surgical Technologist supports both patients and the Health Care team, enhancing population-based care, ensuring continuity of care, promoting customer satisfaction, and encouraging self-care.
Exhibiting strong interpersonal and communication skills, the Surgical Technologist maintains a caring, respectful, and team-oriented attitude.
The Surgical Technologist operates in the scrub role during surgical procedures and coordinates effectively with other operating room professionals.Key Responsibilities:
Performance Standards:
Adheres to shift, unit, and organizational policies and procedures, including reliability and attendance expectations. Monitors attendance and takes corrective measures to prevent recurring absences. Returns promptly from breaks and schedules them to ensure adequate coverage. Limits personal business to non-patient care areas during breaks. Complies with Kaiser’s Time Keeping Policy to accurately reflect productive time worked. Takes initiative to stay informed about organizational policies and current information disseminated by the employer. Fulfills contractual obligations related to work schedules. Engages in unit Quality Assurance Programs. Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skills through a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Utilizes professional communication techniques and maintains confidentiality of all patient and organizational records (HIPAA Standards). Encourages collaboration and professional interaction within the health care team. Upholds professional conduct and complies with department Standards of Behavior. Attends relevant in-services and actively participates in staff meetings, demonstrating awareness of new information shared in communication channels.
Assessment Standards:
Effectively communicates information to ensure continuity of care. Engages with patients, families, and colleagues in a professional and courteous manner.
Acquires and demonstrates the skills and knowledge necessary to provide culturally sensitive care to patients and families through education, training, and experience.
Participates in thorough pre-operative briefings and time-outs, providing continuous reassessment throughout the intra-operative period.Planning Standards:
Utilizes knowledge of surgical procedures to plan for appropriate setup.
Demonstrates the skills and knowledge required to provide age-appropriate care to patients through education, training, and experience.
Implementation Standards:
Initiates appropriate measures based on protocols for managing intra-operative patients. Applies aseptic techniques, evaluates sterile packs and supplies, and maintains an organized sterile environment. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team while observing sterile techniques at all times. Performs necessary procedures accurately to ensure patient safety during surgery. Assists with correct body alignment in positioning and transferring patients. Inspects unused equipment and instruments for contamination and transports used instruments to the utility room.
Responsible for sterile core activities, prioritizing duties such as:
Completing case cart preparations, restocking, and reordering supplies as needed, and assisting with operating room requirements. Responds appropriately in emergency situations and collaborates with the Circulator to prepare for upcoming cases.
Room Turnover Responsibilities:
Performs light housekeeping duties, procures equipment, supplies, and X-rays, restocks unused supplies, and participates in the reprocessing process.

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
License, Certification, Registration
Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.
Surgical Technologist Certification required upon hire.
Additional Requirements:
Knowledge of sterile core operations.
Understanding of sterile techniques, operating room procedures and equipment; dexterity with hands; ability to build effective relationships; and the capacity to exercise sound judgment and discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in scrubbing for various surgical procedures in inpatient or ambulatory operating room settings.
Ability to rotate through sterile core areas.
Experience in cleaning and reprocessing instruments, stocking supplies, and preparing case carts.
