Job Overview
Under the general supervision of the designated shift Sergeant, the Campus Safety Coordinator engages in routine policy enforcement and security operations aimed at protecting individuals and safeguarding university assets.

The Campus Safety Coordinator is responsible for securing designated properties against potential loss or damage while ensuring the safety of all campus community members.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting patrols and rounds of the assigned area by foot or vehicle; monitoring for unauthorized individuals or activities; reporting unusual occurrences to the shift Sergeant; contacting law enforcement for assistance when necessary.
  • Assisting with traffic management and parking for special events.
  • Providing information to university faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Escorting members of the university community to and from buildings and parking areas as required.
  • Managing lost and found services.
  • Inspecting for safety, fire, and security hazards.
  • Monitoring fire and security alarm systems.
  • Locking and unlocking facilities as requested by authorized personnel.
  • Preparing reports; issuing traffic citations; conducting disaster and emergency evaluations and management; relieving dispatchers when necessary.
  • Performing minor building maintenance tasks, such as unstopping toilets, securing broken windows, turning off water, and resetting 110-volt electric circuit breakers.
  • Responding to various types of building and equipment alarms, coordinating with local fire and police departments as they arrive.
  • Working on a rotating shift basis, which includes the ability to work occasional overtime and being available for 24-hour emergency on-call status.
  • Carrying out similar and other position-related tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of the university's structure and functions.
  • Familiarity with state, county, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Understanding of university policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Capability to adhere to a chain of command.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding investigations, incidents, and reports.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and interact with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Alertness in observing unusual conditions and reporting them to the appropriate authorities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear, concise written reports in English.
  • Skill in applying proper safety precautions.
  • Physical capability to work both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Physical endurance for standing and/or walking for extended periods, stair climbing, bending, stooping, and manual dexterity, including lifting up to fifty pounds.
  • Perceptual skills for sound, form, and depth.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or GED is required, along with one (1) year of law enforcement or security experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Candidates must possess a "Class D" security license with the State of Florida or be willing to pursue and obtain such certification. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record, as determined by the university's auto insurance carrier, are also required.
