Job Title: Professional Engineer 1 (Electrical)

Job Summary:

The New York State Education Department's Office of Education Policy is seeking a highly skilled Professional Engineer 1 (Electrical) to join our team in the Office of Facilities Planning. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for reviewing and approving engineering construction documents for capital construction projects undertaken by public school districts and BOCES.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review construction documents for conformance with NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, NEC, NFPA, Commissioner's health and safety regulations, NYSED's Manual of Planning Standards, and other applicable rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to school districts, architects, and engineers working on public school projects.
  • Interpret codes, rules, standards, and regulations where necessary.
  • Respond to correspondence from a wide range of individuals, including parents, citizens, school administrators, consultants, and legislators.
  • Supervise and develop Assistant Engineer (Electrical), SG-20 staff to grow professionally.
  • Work collaboratively with other agencies, such as NYSERDA, NYPA, DEC, DOH, DPS, and utilities on energy generation/efficiency and climate change policies.
  • Facilitate the adoption of school programs such as solar or alternative energy systems; electric school buses; decarbonization and electrification of school HVAC systems.

Requirements:

  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration.
  • A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, such as Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
  • One year of full-time qualifying engineering experience in electrical systems.

Working Conditions:

This position will require (5%) in-state travel. The successful candidate will be required to possess a New York State Professional Engineers license and current registration at the time of hire and maintain it throughout their employment.
