Job Summary
The HS Assistant Manager I is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of high-volume high school kitchens and cafeterias. This role ensures that diverse meal programs are prepared on schedule and in accordance with food safety guidelines. The manager is also responsible for supervising, evaluating, and training school cafeteria staff. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Key Responsibilities * Manage food and supply inventories, ordering, production records, cash handling procedures, and bank deposits * Ensure compliance with USDA and State guidelines for meal pattern and service requirements * Monitor and record kitchen equipment temperatures, proper food heating and cooling times, and temperatures according to HACCP requirements * Maintain sanitation and food safety practices, and ensure proper food serving techniques and portion controls * Prepare and organize meal programs, and assign work to kitchen staff as needed * Adhere to Student Nutrition Department and Anchorage School District policies and procedures Requirements * High school diploma or equivalent; two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of education * Three years of experience in a large-scale food service operation, including food preparation, proper food handling, and food safety and sanitation * Two years of supervisory experience, including planning and directing employees' daily work schedule and tasks * Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic math skills * Ability to attend the eight-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety class and pass the associated examination within 21 calendar days from date of hire Preferred Qualifications * Experience providing training in staff kitchen responsibilities * Experience working with food service point of sale and inventory management systems * Previous food service experience as a food service manager Work Environment This role is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The employee may be regularly exposed to a video display and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Physical/Mental Demands The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with their hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.
