Overview & Key Responsibilities

This position involves specialized public safety duties at municipal aquatic facilities aimed at preventing water-related emergencies. The individual will be tasked with ensuring safe swimming conditions, enforcing established guidelines, and providing assistance to individuals in distress. Responsibilities also include maintaining the quality of pool water and the overall appearance of aquatic facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Observe and monitor the activities of swimmers in and around the aquatic facilities.
  • Enforce all established safety rules and regulations pertaining to swimming.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies; perform rescues using appropriate techniques; administer first aid and CPR as needed; call for emergency services when required.
  • Inform patrons of any unsafe swimming conditions.
  • Maintain an inventory of first aid supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in keeping the area clean and orderly, including restrooms and waste disposal.
  • Handle cashier duties as required.
  • Conduct water quality assessments and apply necessary chemicals to ensure proper water balance.
  • Document incidents, accidents, and first aid responses as required.
  • May officiate at swimming competitions.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks, including written reports and communication with team members.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Preferred: Six months of experience in lifeguarding or aquatic instruction.
Special Requirements:
  • Minimum age of sixteen (16) years.
  • Must hold and maintain the following certifications:
    1. CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
    2. Standard First Aid
    3. American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent certification.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification within six (6) months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with local and state water safety regulations.
  • Understanding of rescue techniques and first aid related to aquatic incidents.
  • Proficient swimming skills and ability to perform rescues.
  • Knowledge of swimming pool chemicals and water quality testing.
  • Ability to act proactively regarding safety measures and recognize emergencies.
  • Capacity to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Good physical fitness and strength to manage distressed swimmers.
Physical Demands
Includes walking, lifting, swimming, and other physical activities. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required.
Work Environment
Work may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions and various environmental factors.
Risk/Safety Conditions
This position involves exposure to potential risks related to health and safety in aquatic environments.
