Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant provides clinical support to the physician and mid-level providers in the Rheumatology department. This role involves providing instructions to patients as directed by the providers, ensuring compliance with all OSHA/CLIA and HIPAA Regulations, and completing all duties vital to business operations.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare patients for exams and acquire vital signs, weight, general history, and current medication lists when required.
- Provide patient care and clinical support to providers during exams, including acupuncture needle removal, application of stimulators, needle counts, venipunctures, injections, and EKGs.
- Document all clinical findings and patient responses to interventions, including history, medications, vital signs, weight, and testing results.
- Collect and provide completed Laboratory/test findings Intake Forms and physician referral information, Diagnostic Imaging, or Cardiopulmonary test results as they become available.
- Provide instruction to patients under the direction of the provider.
- Register patients, obtain necessary insurance information, and collect co-pays or bill payments.
- Provide customer-focused service and support patient flow in a unit or department, including patient registration, scheduling, billing, pre-certification, medical records retrieval, release, or collection, and data entry.
- Resolve routine patient problems and complaints in a timely manner, handle conflicts constructively, and initiate further follow-up with appropriate staff members.
- Schedule surgical and non-surgical procedures, tests, therapy, referrals, appointments, and services, ensuring accuracy of data entered into scheduling systems.
- Communicate schedule updates, cancellations, changes, and delays to appropriate staff, patients, family members, and visitors.
- Accurately complete or assure completion of registration processes and facilitate revenue enhancement through insurance verification, pre-authorization, verification of medical necessity, and follow-up of denials.
- Obtain treatment authorizations, collect patient co-pays, co-insurance, and/or deductibles, and follow up with insurance companies for payment.
- Coordinate multiple phone lines, InBasket communications, take messages, screen calls, receive information, and transfer calls to appropriate extensions.
- Relay messages to appropriate staff to facilitate communication and assure quality of care.
- Support coworkers in operational functions, including front desk coverage, answering phones, running errands, and transporting patients.
- Coordinate translation arrangements for day and time of patient services.
- Perform medical records tasks, including chart retrieval, storage, filing, and scanning in the correct location of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Maintain adequate levels of supplies in exam rooms and workstations, clean and disinfect exam rooms, and report malfunctioning equipment to department supervisors.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Non-Exempt FLSA Status
