Position Overview: The Senior Vehicle Technician is responsible for diagnosing vehicle issues, executing preventive maintenance, and repairing a variety of transit and support vehicles, whether in the field or at the designated maintenance facility. This role involves general vehicle repairs, expertise in specific paint and bodywork, as well as basic electrical and electronic diagnostics and repairs. Supervision is a key aspect of this position, with reporting duties to the Maintenance Supervisor on duty.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical and Mechanical Duties:

  • Maintain expertise in diagnosing and repairing all vehicles within the fleet.
  • Proficiently remove and replace various components on transit vehicles.
  • Ensure accurate diagnostic skills and effective repair techniques for optimal equipment functionality.
  • Conduct thorough preventive maintenance inspections efficiently and effectively.
  • Address any issues identified during preventive maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Develop skills in the following areas:
    • Executing all levels of preventive maintenance.
    • Inspecting and repairing wheelchair lifts, ramps, and restraints.
    • Adjusting and repairing suspension system components.
    • Testing and repairing electrical and lighting systems.
    • Replacing body components such as glazing, mirrors, and panels.
    • Applying body filler correctly.
    • Overhauling brake systems.
  • Respond to road service calls for vehicle breakdowns.
  • Conduct road tests to ensure safety and quality of repairs.
  • Perform duties of Helper, Servicer, and Cleaner as necessary.
  • Communicate with supervisors regarding additional work needs or changes in repair timelines.
  • Operate a forktruck as required.

Administrative and Team Collaboration:

  • Engage professionally with colleagues regarding vehicle repairs and shop operations.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and responsibilities.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and work orders as directed.
  • Report any equipment misuse or tampering to the shop supervisor.
  • Provide training to fellow employees on safe and efficient fleet maintenance practices.
  • Participate in the daily operations of the maintenance facility.
  • Interpret maintenance manuals and wiring diagrams accurately.
  • Manage records in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in line with industry standards.
  • Utilize all mechanic tools safely and effectively.
  • Stay informed and compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, particularly concerning hazardous waste and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Complete additional maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE at all times.
