We are seeking a Chief Safety Officer for Campus Operations to oversee a dedicated team responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. This role will support the Executive Director of Campus Safety and Lab Resources in crafting strategies that enhance the effectiveness of the Campus Safety department, ensuring a secure environment across all university facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Provide technical support for the Campus Safety department, focusing on systems such as video surveillance, access control, and fire safety.
  • Coordinate maintenance and upgrades of security systems in collaboration with external vendors.
  • Design and implement educational initiatives to raise awareness about safety and security issues within the university community.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop strategies for improving safety protocols, technology integration, and crime prevention initiatives.
  • Manage disaster preparedness projects, including training for emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, and active shooter scenarios.
  • Analyze incident data and prepare comprehensive reports for executive leadership, detailing the activities of the Campus Safety Department.
  • Ensure compliance with Clery Act and Title IX regulations, including the metrics required for annual reporting.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating special events, ensuring safety protocols are in place.
  • Oversee the management of key control systems for all university properties.
  • Foster partnerships with local law enforcement and emergency services.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring adherence and reviewing operational activities.
  • Plan and allocate budgets for uniforms, equipment, and operational needs of the department.
  • Provide on-call support and immediate response to campus safety concerns.
  • Supervise the performance and operations of the Campus Host, Dispatch, and Patrol teams, collaborating with Human Resources on staffing and disciplinary matters.
  • Create training programs for Campus Safety personnel.
  • Assist Human Resources in the recruitment process for open positions.

Operational Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct regular maintenance checks on security systems with vendor assistance.
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and annual operational reports.
  • Manage payroll processes and ensure compliance with administrative protocols.
  • Lead investigations into incidents such as theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities, coordinating with local authorities as necessary.
  • Oversee security measures for all Academy facilities, both academic and residential.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Stay informed about university policies and safety publications.
  • Assess staffing needs for special events to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Promote awareness of Campus Safety initiatives throughout the university.
  • Maintain and update the Campus Safety Manual and related documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Campus Safety and Lab Resources.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid California driver's license and meet insurance requirements.
  • Ability to effectively communicate safety policies to a diverse audience.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving skills in challenging situations.
  • Exhibit exceptional customer service skills in all interactions.
  • Manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Physical capability to walk and stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to walk several city blocks at a time.

Compensation:

$70,000 - $90,000 annually based on experience.
