Job Summary

This is a challenging opportunity to join the State of South Carolina as a Highway Maintenance Worker II: Heavy Equipment Operator. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating heavy motorized equipment, supporting foremen in daily safety work practices, and performing various duties related to highway maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy motorized equipment such as backhoes, dozers, crawlers, excavators, front-end loaders, lowboy truck tractors, motor graders, and tractors with ditchers.
  • Support foremen in daily safety work practices, including flagging operations, PPE, vehicle safety, CDL inspections, hazardous material waste, and other related work practices.
  • Perform various duties related to highway maintenance, including clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning and grading drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying pipes, building catch basins, and pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks, and raised medians.
  • Assist in on-call operations for after-hour emergencies, snow and ice plan, and hurricane lane reversal plan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
