The Lead Software Engineer for Laboratory Information Systems plays a pivotal role in the planning, design, development, testing, debugging, deployment, and ongoing support of innovative web and desktop applications utilized across the organization, specifically related to the HORIZON Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position demands a high level of technical expertise and leadership, guiding multiple project teams through the entire project lifecycle with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with project teams to gather, analyze, and document business requirements.
- Transform collected requirements into comprehensive development and architectural design documentation.
- Oversee the planning, design, development, testing, debugging, deployment, and maintenance of applications associated with the HORIZON LIMS.
- Configure workflows and conduct testing of codes (Acodes) within the HORIZON LIMS application.
- Create and develop reports and data files utilizing Telerik Reports and Oracle PL/SQL.
- Enhance HL7 message interfaces pertinent to the HORIZON LIMS application.
- Utilize a full-stack development skill set to mentor project teams through complex challenges.
- Engage in all project phases as a key contributor and leader, ensuring alignment of SLDC activities with the overall project timeline.
- Conduct software analysis, code reviews, requirements assessments, and risk evaluations.
- Support and configure database and server environments as necessary.
- Work in conjunction with the database team to design and implement SQL/Oracle databases when required.
- Develop Oracle PL/SQL functions and procedures for use by other development teams.
- Perform quality assurance and quality control on both existing and new applications.
- Identify and logically resolve problem areas, developing and implementing projects to mitigate technical debt.
- Administer version control software, adhering to established version and change control protocols throughout the development lifecycle.
- Provide application support for the software development team and related custom applications.
- Contribute to corporate-level project submissions and documentation.
Additional Responsibilities
- Engage in process improvement initiatives, including defining processes, measuring performance, and implementing controls.
- Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.
- Offer technical thought leadership and collaborate effectively with subject matter experts, project managers, and functional leaders.
- Document essential SDLC processes through formal documentation such as solution architecture and technical design specifications.
- Simplify complex development projects into concise summaries for senior leadership.
- Lead the submission of corporate-level projects.
- Contribute to strategic planning for new IT solutions and architecture.
- Work with project management to establish timelines and facilitate meetings as necessary.
- Support the technical design process by analyzing technical requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, completion of a software development program, or equivalent experience is required.
- A minimum of six (6) years of experience with programming languages including Oracle PL/SQL, .NET C#, HTML, and JavaScript.
- Proficient in SQL query, PL/SQL, stored procedures, and SSMS or equivalent.
- Experience with database reporting tools such as Telerik Reports is preferred.
- Familiarity with version control systems, particularly GIT/Azure DevOps, is required.
- Experience with QA toolkits like Selenium/Appian is preferred.
- Knowledge of creating Visual Studio unit tests is a plus.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies is essential.
- Ability to learn rapidly and work independently or collaboratively.
- Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the SLDC.
- Knowledge of desktop and/or web application development environments is required.
- Strong communication, technical, analytical, and project management skills are essential.
- Experience in laboratory or healthcare settings is preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
