About the Job

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a skilled and experienced individual to perform a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure, utilities, facilities, and property.

Key Responsibilities
  • Construction and Maintenance: Perform skilled concrete finishing work to construct, install, repair road, drainage, and utility infrastructure.
  • Road Maintenance: Lay, smooth, and repair asphalt and concrete; patch/repair potholes and sinkholes; grade work sites; pack ground materials; install reflective markers in streets; paint markings such as turn lanes, crosswalks, and parking spaces onto road surfaces.
  • Tree Maintenance: Set up equipment, harnesses, and safety gear; climb trees; fell trees and/or trim branches; utilize chain saws, pole saws, stump grinders, and industrial chippers to cut and grind up debris.
  • Municipal Ball Field Maintenance: Mow grass, paint field lines, aerate and water fields as needed, and related tasks.
  • General Maintenance: Perform semi-skilled maintenance work to assist with the skilled repair of electrical, HVAC, utilities, and mechanical systems; perform painting, plumbing, carpentry, plastering, and electrical work that does not require a licensed technician.
  • Public Roads and Utility Infrastructure Maintenance: Repair roads/asphalt, dig, patch holes, compact road surfaces, maintain drainage systems, install/repair pipe, construct/repair ditches, clear drainage obstructions, clear ditches/gutters, break up pipes and concrete, cut pipes, install fences, spread asphalt/road materials, dig holes or trenches, shovel materials, lift/move heavy materials, assist electric line crews, and flag traffic.
  • Parks and Grounds Maintenance: Mow lawns; trim and edge grass; blow leaves from walkways; plant, prune, and maintain plants, trees, and shrubs; spread mulch; rake leaves; clear debris.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Clean public restrooms in parks and recreational facilities, shop and work areas, and other city facilities; sweep and mop floors; dust and clean offices, meeting rooms, or other work areas; strip, wax, and polish floors; polish furniture; collect and remove waste; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms and replenish supplies.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of power equipment, machinery, and hand tools used in department projects and activities.
  • General Maintenance Tasks: Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations.
  • Safety and Compliance: Utilize precautionary safety equipment and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Documentation and Communication: Receive, prepare, or complete various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience in construction and maintenance of public infrastructure, utilities, facilities, and property.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license; may be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one (1) month of employment and maintain throughout employment for this classification; may be required to obtain Flagging certification.
