Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Safety Aide to join our team at Lancaster General Health. As a Patient Safety Aide, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients. Your primary responsibility will be to provide direct observation and supervision to patients who require close monitoring due to safety concerns.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision and observation to patients with safety concerns, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, hygiene, and feeding, as needed.
  • Use appropriate resources to support patients with special needs, including language barriers, sensory problems, and cultural and religious needs.
  • Integrate principles of infection control and infection prevention into practice, using standard precautions and personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Interact with patients in a manner that preserves their dignity, privacy, and meets their psychosocial and age-appropriate needs.
  • Stay at the patient's bedside and keep them in your direct line of vision at all times, requesting assistance as needed.
  • Escorts and assists patients with ambulatory and bathroom privileges, staying with them at all times and requesting assistance as needed.
  • Interact with patients to provide diversionary activities and engage them in conversation, reading, or other activities.
  • Assist patients with re-positioning and bed-to-chair transfers, as needed.
  • Help patients with general comfort needs, keeping their immediate care area free of clutter and hazards.
  • Monitor patients per policy and within a manner that protects the safety of patients and others.
  • Communicate patient and unit information to the RN and interdisciplinary team in a timely manner.
  • Seek help from the patient's primary RN and interdisciplinary team when needed.
  • Inform the patient's primary RN when experiencing difficulty completing an assignment.
  • Receive report and clarify information as needed.
  • Stay with the patient until relieved by another Patient Safety Assistant or healthcare provider.
  • Clarify break times with the patient's primary RN and nursing staff.
  • Inform the patient's primary RN when leaving the unit for any reason.
  • Ensure there is coverage for the patient before leaving the patient's bedside.
  • Introduce yourself to the patient and explain your role.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new Patient Safety Assistants.
  • Document patient behaviors and interventions in the Electronic Medical Record or on paper as appropriate.
  • Perform duties in accordance with Penn Medicine Lancaster General values, policies, and procedures.
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Communicate support of organizational values and strategies.
  • Support organizational programs and perform job duties in accordance with these standards.
  • Perform assigned duties directed by staff to maintain unit in a state of survey readiness and maintains quality initiatives.
  • Read hospital emails regularly and attend staff meetings regularly.
  • Keep patient care area and work environment safe, neat, organized.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must complete on-the-job orientation and training as scheduled.
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English.
  • Healthcare provider CPR (can attain certification within 30 days of hire).
