Position Title: Support Specialist for Individuals with Special Needs

Supervisor: Navigator

Gesher Human Services is dedicated to fostering hope and opportunities for individuals in various settings, including the workplace, home, and community. Our programs focus on workforce development, behavioral health, and inclusion, serving the diverse needs of all Metro Detroit residents while supporting the Jewish community.

General Overview

The Support Specialist for Individuals with Special Needs plays a crucial role in executing behavioral training initiatives by employing modeling techniques and positive reinforcement during transitional phases. This position also involves assisting clients with their daily routines.

Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: Prior experience working with individuals who have developmental, emotional, or physical challenges is preferred. Certification in First Aid and CPR is mandatory. Familiarity with training methodologies, behavior modification strategies, and task analysis is essential. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective communication with clients, the public, and team members. Proficient writing skills are required for report preparation. Flexibility to perform duties in various community-based environments is expected.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Implement behavioral and training programs effectively.
  2. Assist designated clients in their daily activities.
  3. Utilize modeling and positive reinforcement techniques to enhance clients' appropriate behaviors and improve their interpersonal skills.
  4. Support clients with personal care, hygiene, and grooming, including providing physical assistance for those with mobility challenges.
  5. Encourage client integration and interaction with peers.
  6. Participate in agency committees as assigned.

Supplemental Responsibilities

Navigate online systems to input data and utilize agency communication tools.

Working Conditions

Environmental Factors:

  • Moderate noise levels typical of an office environment with computers, phones, and printers.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Capability to sit at a computer for extended periods.
  • Work may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including temperature variations and cleaning agents.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands for computer and telephone operations.
  • Specific vision abilities required for close computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting may be necessary.

Flexibility in working hours and travel to community sites may be required.
