Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose:

The Certified Histology Specialist is responsible for the meticulous preparation and processing of tissue specimens for histological examination by pathologists. This role encompasses various histological techniques, including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining, to facilitate accurate evaluation and diagnosis.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities:

  1. Receives and prepares tissue samples and biological materials using established histological methods, ensuring proper labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
  2. Sections and stains histological specimens for routine and specialized studies, preparing various stains and solutions as needed, while adhering to written technical protocols.
  3. Prioritizes tasks effectively, ensuring compliance with laboratory turnaround time standards and utilizing time efficiently.
  4. Assists pathologists within the defined scope of practice.
  5. Monitors and manages supply inventory, assisting in the ordering and stocking of reagents and materials, while following laboratory inventory protocols.
  6. Demonstrates proficiency in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory equipment, performing routine maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  7. Exhibits the ability to multitask efficiently and work independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Option 1: Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program.
  2. Option 2: High School diploma with 60 college/university semester hours, including 12 hours in biology and chemistry, along with one year of full-time relevant experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years.
  3. Option 3: Associate's degree with 12 hours in biology and chemistry, and one year of full-time relevant experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years.
  4. Option 4: High School diploma with two or more years of experience in all areas of routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification.

Preferred Education and Certifications:

  1. Associate's degree and successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician program.
  2. Histotechnician certification (HT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training:

Detail-oriented with strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to prioritize responsibilities effectively.

Pay Range:

$32.82 /hour
