Sprinkler Irrigation Technician III Job Description

Under the direction of a district supervisor or manager, the Sprinkler Irrigation Technician III performs semi-skilled or skilled plumbing duties involved in new construction, maintenance, repair, and remodeling of City-owned sprinkler, irrigation systems, and facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs pipes, fittings, valves, heads, and fixtures of irrigation, water, and drainage systems.
  • Works with all levels of staff to resolve irrigation problems and issues, making recommendations and adjustments as needed.
  • Installs, tests, and maintains systems for automatic or mode operation controls of pumps, valves, and other industrial equipment.
  • Repairs and services water distribution and sewage facilities, landscape water sprinkler systems, and waste/vent systems.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints to install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metal and non-metal materials.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, water heaters, and water softeners, and decorative water fountains piping and pumps.
  • Maintains pump stations and backflow preventers in an operable condition and responds to alarms caused by equipment malfunction.
  • Serves as a technical resource for irrigation systems management and water conservation.
  • Participates in meetings and attends training seminars, vendor demonstrations, and courses to remain current with the latest techniques and technologies.
  • Operates heavy equipment, snowplows, blowers, backhoes, or other similar equipment as needed.

Requirements:

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of repair/maintenance experience in the field.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, work orders, drawings, and diagrams.
  • Ability to operate various equipment, including hand and power tools.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or driving privilege card.
  • Commercial Driver's License, Class A, or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Backflow certification, acquired within six months of employment.
  • IPS Glue certification and electrical wire and troubleshooting certification, acquired within six months of employment.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderately heavy physical activity.
  • Exposure to disagreeable elements, such as dust, fumes, noise, dampness, cold, heat, chemicals, or grease.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round.
  • Considerable stress under emergency situations, time constraints, and possible injury and/or death.
