Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

Conducts a comprehensive range of sanitation tasks in designated areas, adhering to general guidelines on the work to be performed. Engages in custodial and janitorial responsibilities including cleaning, disinfecting, disposing of waste, and replenishing supplies in public restrooms; performing vacuuming, mopping, dusting, and waste disposal. Cleans walls utilizing powered wall washing equipment and/or manually. Operates and maintains heavy-duty vacuum cleaners for carpets and rugs. Adjusts, cleans, and lubricates these machines, replacing brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments as necessary. Moves substantial furniture, supplies, and equipment. Occasionally utilizes ladders and scaffolding to replace light bulbs, wash walls, etc. Maintains cleanliness and organization in shop areas. Sweeps and mops floors, and addresses various liquid and solid waste spills. Regularly operates light-duty vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, flatbed trucks, 5-yard dump trucks, etc.) to transport personnel, materials, or equipment to work sites located within the park. Physical Requirements: The role necessitates moderate to heavy physical exertion, involving lifting and moving objects exceeding 40 pounds and occasionally items weighing over 50 pounds. Custodial workers must manage and maneuver heavy equipment, set up ladders and scaffolding, and work from elevated positions. Grade 2 custodial workers are also required to handle heavy equipment and work from heights. Frequently, they must lift and move objects weighing approximately 40 pounds, with occasional lifts exceeding 50 pounds.

Work Environment: Typically operates indoors in areas that provide adequate heating, lighting, and ventilation. The worker may experience vibrations from heavy machinery and skin irritations from potent cleaning agents used in floor maintenance. Caution is essential to prevent serious injuries while working at heights. Grade 2 Custodial Workers generally work indoors, in environments that offer sufficient heat, light, and ventilation.

U.S. Citizenship is required. Appointment is subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act is required for males. The selected candidate will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. A valid driver's license is necessary as the role involves operating a government (or private) motor vehicle. The candidate must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. Additionally, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, must be submitted at the candidate's expense. Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is mandatory, and a uniform allowance will be provided. The role may require on-call work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

Volunteer work contributes to essential competencies, knowledge, and skills, providing valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be credited.

CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals with special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
