Job Summary

The Shop Foreman is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the truck repair shop, ensuring that all repairs are completed efficiently and effectively. This role requires strong leadership and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of heavy-duty truck repair and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and Coordinate Repair Activities: Direct and coordinate the activities of mechanics in the diagnosis and repair of medium and heavy-duty trucks.
  • Train and Develop Mechanics: Train mechanics in mechanical skills needed to perform repairs and maintenance.
  • Recommend Equipment and Supplies: Recommend equipment, materials, supplies, and parts required to repair medium and heavy-duty trucks.
  • Monitor Warranty Procedures: Monitor warranty procedures followed by technicians to ensure compliance and minimize costs.
  • Coordinate Repair and Maintenance: Coordinate the repair and maintenance of service equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Review Performance and Provide Feedback: Review the performance of mechanics and provide feedback to improve their skills and productivity.
  • Assist with Hiring and Firing: Assist the Service Manager in hiring and firing employees, ensuring that the right candidates are selected for the role.
  • Provide Excellent Customer Service: Assist the Service Manager and Service Advisor in answering customer calls and providing excellent customer service.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Document Customer Service Requests: Document the customer's service requests and provide a clear understanding of the work to be performed.
  • Advise Customers on Routine Maintenance: Advise customers on necessary service for routine maintenance to prevent costly repairs.
  • Identify Mechanical Problems: Identify the mechanical problem by questioning the customer and performing a visual inspection or road test.
  • Save Parts and Identify Warrantable Repairs: Identify if the repair is warrantable and save parts when applicable.
  • Look Up Federal Recalls and Safety Checks: Look up Federal Recalls and Safety Checks to ensure that all necessary repairs are completed.
  • Open Repair Orders and Obtain Customer Approval: Open the repair order, showing time, cost, and labor estimates for service, and contact the customer for approval to perform the repairs.
  • Communicate with Customers: Contact customers about additional problems found and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Get Written Authorization: Get written authorization from the customer to perform the requested repairs.
  • Write Clear Descriptions of Problems: Write a brief but clear description of the problem on the repair order to help the mechanic locate the problem.
  • Schedule Service Work: Schedule service work to be done and assign to the mechanic.
  • Monitor Repair Progress: Monitor repair progress to ensure that repairs are performed in a timely manner.
  • Review and Close Repair Orders: Review and close repair orders to ensure that all work is completed and customers are satisfied.
  • Explain Work Performed: Explain the work performed to the customer and the cost.
  • Deal with Customer Complaints: Deal with customer complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
Qualifications
  • Education/Training or Experience: High School graduate or GED required; Diploma from Technical College or equivalent experience required; Intermediate to advanced computer skills required; 2 years' experience in heavy-duty truck repair required; CDL preferred.
