Job Title: Histology Technician

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a skilled Histology Technician to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist. This involves tissue sampling, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine staining, and diagnostic special staining.

Responsibilities:
  • Receives and logs in tissue specimens, utilizing correct charging guidelines.
  • Creates log sheets for each day of operation to track additional billing and procedure charges.
  • Utilizes proper specimen labeling techniques to identify and label specimen containers, requisition forms, and tissue cassettes.
  • Verifies the identity of each specimen during processing and examination.
  • Assists the pathologist with gross descriptions and photography of complicated specimens.
  • Prepares tissue slides and stains them according to policy and procedure.
  • Creates slide labels and performs quality control checks using specimen log sheets.
  • Delivers slides to the pathologist.
  • Prepares specimens by frozen section technique within established turnaround times.
  • Performs special staining techniques as determined by review from the supervisor and/or pathologist.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.
  • Successful completion of an approved ASCP certified Histology Program.
  • HT certification (ASCP or equivalent) or eligible.
  • Previous experience in Histology equivalent to 3 years full-time experience in the past 10 years is preferred but not required.
Work Environment:

The Histology Technician will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, requiring attention to detail and ability to follow established department policies and procedures.
