Job Summary

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (A-MSA) is a critical member of the interdisciplinary team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. This role requires a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to provide administrative support to healthcare teams, ensuring seamless patient care and efficient clinic operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to review clinic utilization and make adjustments as needed to ensure effective support for patients and clinics.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with patients, interdisciplinary teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies to ensure seamless care coordination.
  • Perform a variety of technical support duties, including scheduling, canceling, and re-scheduling patient appointments and consults.
  • Monitor patient appointment schedules and communicate delays to staff and patients as needed.
  • Resolve complaints of a local administrative nature and refer other complaints to appropriate authorities.
  • Update and verify patient demographic information and provide information regarding clinic and hospital policies, procedures, and locations to patients, family members, and staff.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be able to pass a background/security investigation and serve a probationary period.
  • Must be able to complete an online onboarding process and pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must be able to participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
Qualifications
  • Applicants must have six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
  • Applicants must have one year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or a combination of experience and education that is equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.
Working Conditions

The Medical Support Assistant work is mostly sedentary, with some walking, standing, and carrying light items required. Light filing, sometimes involving working close to the floor, is involved. Wrist and back protection can be provided to minimize the risks associated with prolonged use of automated data processing equipment.
