Key Responsibilities:
General Duties:
Conducts echocardiograms:
Prepares patients for diagnostic tests, executes the necessary procedures, and delivers results to the cardiologist with minimal oversight. Generates preliminary reports for the interpreting physician as per established protocols.
Executes high-quality echocardiograms, thoroughly examining both normal and abnormal cardiac and extracardiac structures across all age groups, from infants to adults. Conducts all quantitative assessments utilizing M-Mode, 2D, and Doppler imaging techniques.
Assists healthcare professionals with transesophageal, epicardial, and intracardiac echocardiographic evaluations.
Independently identifies simple congenital heart defects and most complex congenital anomalies.
Performs fetal echocardiograms as necessary.
Organizational Skills:
Completes preliminary reports for all tests conducted for physician review.
Recognizes the indications and limitations of various examinations and procedures.
Orders and maintains inventory of specific supplies required for duties, ensuring necessary replacements are stocked.
Contributes to special projects, policy development, and performance enhancement initiatives as requested.
Evaluates new equipment and procedures, providing recommendations for improvements.
Maintains cleanliness and readiness of the examination room and equipment throughout the day.
Knowledge and Quality Assurance:
Adheres to continuing medical education requirements as stipulated by ARDMS and IAC. Participates in echocardiography lab quality assurance reviews and relevant conferences to enhance knowledge and skills in congenital heart disease.
Conducts quality control and preventative maintenance of diagnostic equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
Engages in quality improvement initiatives related to echocardiography studies, aligning with IAC standards.
Participates in training sessions related to cardiology.
Research and Mentorship:
May engage in research activities, presentations, and educational sessions as directed.
Assists in data collection for research projects and performance improvement initiatives.
Supports the training of new staff members under general supervision.
Licenses and Certifications:
Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a medical or cardiac sonographer.
Certified in Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association.
Skills and Competencies:
Proficient in ultrasound physics, cardiac and vascular anatomy, medical terminology, and the understanding of physician orders.
Ability to identify anatomical landmarks, utilize manual dexterity for accurate probe placement, and draw clinically relevant conclusions from raw data.
Basic computer skills and data entry proficiency are essential. Strong analytical skills are required to prioritize tasks effectively. Must be capable of multitasking and working independently.
