Diagnostic Technologist Job Description

The Diagnostic Technologist is a vital member of our team at South Central Health System, responsible for providing high-quality radiology imaging services to our patients. This role requires a strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform ordered exams per department and SCRMC policy and procedure.
  • Verify physician orders, ensuring appropriateness and accuracy.
  • Verify patient identity prior to performing exams.
  • Practice and promote teamwork within the department, hospital, and SCRMC facilities.
  • Display accountability for assigned tasks and responsibilities.
  • Assist radiologists and physicians as needed.
  • Participate in educational opportunities for new equipment and procedures.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and computer functions.
  • Transport radiology patients as required.
  • Adhere to department and SCRMC policies, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Handle trauma patients according to policy and procedure.
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, correct orientation, and patient identification.
  • Perform portable radiography within hospital and at LTC facilities.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and stocked environment.
  • Adhere to safety, radiation, and infection control policies.
  • Instruct and evaluate student radiographers.
  • Assist in training new employees and cross-training.
  • Assist in all areas of the department as needed.
  • Report outcomes to radiology supervisor or team leader.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement.
  • Display proficiency in imaging equipment, RIS, CRs, and laser printers.
  • Explain procedures and availability of reports to patients.
  • Assist radiologists in exam performance.
  • Administer IV contrast using sterile technique and document use.
  • Assist in scheduling radiology exams.
Essential Functions:
  • Demonstrate understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • Maintain high accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique.
  • Use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing duties.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills.
  • Work as a team member.
  • Skilled in radiography equipment operation.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of computer technology.
  • Perform duties using proper body mechanics.
  • Frequently move/lift patients and equipment.
  • Stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Follow directions/instructions from supervisor.
  • Consistent attendance required to meet client facilities' needs and patient needs.
  • Comply with all facilities' policies, procedures, and practices.
Working Conditions:

The Registered Technologist must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as radiation, noise, infectious/communicable diseases, blood and blood-borne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, and dusts.

Frequent exposure to distressed patients, families, or visitors.
