Application Requirements
Licensing and Certification: Candidates must possess Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Law Enforcement certification, successfully pass a criminal history check, psychological evaluation, and polygraph test, along with holding a valid Georgia driver's license.
Educational Background: An Associate's degree in a relevant field is required, or the candidate must obtain one within three years of the hire date.
Experience: A minimum of five years of law enforcement experience is necessary.
Skills: Candidates should demonstrate effective communication abilities, active listening skills, and the capacity to engage with students, educators, and community members. The ability to teach subjects related to law enforcement, citizenship, safety, crime prevention, and criminal justice is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
As a School Safety Officer, you will:
- Support the local school administration in ensuring a safe and secure environment for students.
- Act as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies, coordinating efforts to enhance school safety.
- Maintain awareness of procedures for interacting with public agencies that may enter the school premises.
- Promote positive relationships between youth and law enforcement to reduce juvenile delinquency.
- Take necessary law enforcement actions to protect against unauthorized individuals.
- Assist in developing and implementing safety plans for the school environment.
- Conduct regular emergency drills and ensure readiness for various scenarios.
- Provide guidance on appropriate law enforcement measures during incidents.
- Be available for consultations with students, parents, and staff regarding law enforcement and crime prevention issues.
- Create and maintain documentation of criminal activities involving students and report any cases of abuse or neglect.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
While fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the employee will frequently be required to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs, run, sit, and engage in various physical activities. The role demands acute listening skills and specific vision capabilities, including close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision. The employee must maintain physical standards necessary to respond to emergencies, restrain individuals, and lift or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The ability to operate a motor vehicle is also required.
