Job Summary

This is a skilled position responsible for performing repairs and maintenance on a variety of automotive and heavy equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of operating principles, safety procedures, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform minor and major engine repairs, including installation of replacement parts and rebuilding of parts
  • Operate various pieces of equipment, vehicles, and machines, including heavy equipment and power tools
  • Communicate with equipment drivers, operators, and supervisors to clarify and further define repair needs
  • Diagnose trouble by visual, aural, and manual inspection or by using testing devices
Requirements
  • Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment
  • Knowledge of and skill in exercising safety precautions while working on or around automotive equipment
  • Knowledge of procedures for installation and repair of parts
  • Skill in disassembling and reassembling parts and equipment in an orderly manner
  • Skill in operating machines, vehicles, and equipment safely
  • Skill in diagnosing equipment defects
  • Skill in rebuilding parts
  • Ability to and skill in performing major and minor equipment repairs and adjustments
  • Ability to instruct new employees through verbal instructions and physical demonstrations of work performed
  • Ability to and skill in reading and interpreting sketches, diagrams, and instructions outlined in equipment repair manuals
  • Ability to learn new methods and techniques for repairing and maintaining light and heavy automotive equipment
  • Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL)
Working Conditions
  • Inside and outside exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
  • Subject to working on and around slippery surfaces
  • Subject to injuries such as sprains, fractures, deep cuts, etc., when repairing or maintaining automotive equipment
  • Subject to working from ladders, platforms, or other equipment up to 12 feet above floor or ground level
  • Subject to working in confined or cramped positions and assuming awkward or strained positions when making equipment repairs
  • Subject to working near moving machinery and power tools
  • Exposed to intermittent or continued loud and insistent noises caused by machinery, equipment, other workers, etc.
  • Subject to burns when working with hot equipment, tools, etc.
  • Frequent to sustained exposure to fumes and gases e.g., carbon monoxide. May require wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Frequent exposure to noxious odors such as garbage trucks, animal control trucks, septic tank cleaning trucks, sewage line cleaning trucks, etc.
  • Subject to electrical shock when working with electrical components
  • Occasionally exposed to infections caused by micro-organisms
  • Subject to working irregular work hours including shifts, 24-hour call, weekends, holidays and overtime
  • Frequent local travel
Physical Requirements
  • Strength enough to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as machinery, parts, power tools, etc.
  • Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out when performing repair tasks
