Position Summary:

The role involves assessing patients with a comprehensive range of visual issues, diagnosing ocular diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing appropriate treatments as permitted by licensure. Referrals to other qualified Kaiser Permanente providers will be made as necessary for further assessment and care.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts thorough examinations of patients experiencing various visual challenges using a complete array of optometric instruments and methodologies.
  • Identifies visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, prescribing treatments in accordance with state regulations.
  • Prescribes and fits contact lenses as needed.
  • Evaluates visual requirements for patients with partial sight.
  • Recommends low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices to assist low-vision patients.
  • Utilizes diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to identify and diagnose ocular conditions, as permitted by state law.
  • Employs examination techniques to uncover ocular indicators of systemic diseases and medication effects.
  • Refers patients to other suitable Kaiser Permanente providers for additional evaluation and treatment.
  • Engages in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review sessions within the department and medical facility.
  • Regularly collaborates with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology regarding patient care matters.
  • Contributes to the development of eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and patient education seminars.
  • In collaboration with an ophthalmologist, evaluates and manages anterior segment disorders under physician standing orders.

Position Details:
This is a full-time float position requiring travel between locations, with a commitment of 50% travel and one Saturday per month.


Basic Qualifications:

Experience: N/A

Education: Graduation from an accredited optometry school.

Licensure: Must possess an Optometrist License in Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia.

Certifications: Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire.

National Provider Identifier must be obtained at hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least two years of experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare setting is preferred, or successful completion of an accredited residency program.

Completion of an accredited residency in Optometry is preferred.
