Job Summary

The Peer Support Specialist will provide peer support to individuals with mental illness, substance abuse, and/or co-occurring disorders. This role model will exhibit competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills, serving as a consumer advocate and providing information and peer support for clients in their homes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop positive relationships with community members.
  • Assist clients in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
  • Outreach to clients as needed.
  • Provide accurate information about available assistance and complete necessary referrals.
  • Refer clients to appropriate programs for assistance.
  • Maintain accurate and timely data entry of all client contacts in data tracking systems.
  • Work collaboratively with various stakeholders to complete required reports to document and program performance outcome measures.
  • Work closely with the Correctional system, Behavioral Health, Medical, and Housing Program staff to determine steps clients need to take to achieve their goals and self-directed recovery.
  • Assist clients in building social skills in the community to enhance positive relationships.
  • Attend staff development trainings and meetings as directed.
  • Cross-training as needed.
Requirements
  • A High School Diploma is required, and an Associate Degree is preferred.
  • A peer specialist certification is required.
  • Experience working as a Peer Specialist or Case Manager is preferred.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with residents, colleagues, community partners, and volunteers.
  • Ability to interact with people from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage and de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Past experience working with mentally ill clients is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of community resources.
  • Good computer skills are needed.
  • A personal vehicle and valid Florida driver's license with the ability to travel are required.
  • An acceptable annual Motor Vehicle Record check is required.
  • Adherence to required insurance coverage levels (Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability: $100,000 each person; $100,000 each accident) if driving a personal vehicle for work-related purposes is required.
  • Ability to pass a Level II Background Screening is required.
