Position Overview

The City of Reno is seeking a dedicated Planning Assistant to support various professional and technical planning activities. This role involves conducting research and analysis on proposed amendments to the master plan, preparing comprehensive staff reports, and providing recommendations based on findings.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential for this position:

  1. Develop and implement detailed long-range land use strategies and policies for the City, engaging with stakeholders and synthesizing data into actionable plans.
  2. Represent the City at various boards and commissions, preparing annual reports that reflect the Planning Commission's activities in relation to regional planning efforts.
  3. Assist the public, developers, and stakeholders with inquiries regarding land development and zoning regulations.
  4. Conduct field assessments of proposed developments to ensure adherence to code requirements.
  5. Prepare and present recommendations for text amendments to the Planning Commission and City Council.
  6. Contribute to the development and maintenance of GIS data, ensuring the GIS database reflects current land use and zoning changes.
  7. Compile and analyze statistical reports to support planning initiatives.
  8. Review development proposals, including building permits and site plans, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and zoning ordinances.
  9. Coordinate with multiple City departments to ensure clarity and consistency in review comments and deadlines.
  10. Analyze requests for amendments to the master plan and zoning changes, ensuring compliance with relevant statutes and ordinances.
  11. Act as a liaison between applicants and City staff, facilitating communication regarding data needs and project timelines.
  12. Respond to public inquiries in a professional manner, providing information and resolving complaints efficiently.
  13. Stay informed about new trends and innovations in the field of planning through participation in professional meetings.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in urban/regional planning, geography, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in urban or regional planning and zoning is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in office software and GIS applications.

Work Environment

This position primarily operates in an office setting, with occasional travel to various sites for field assessments. Candidates should be prepared for a dynamic work environment that requires effective multitasking and collaboration with various stakeholders.
