Position Overview

The Planning Assistant role is a vital part-time position that operates under general oversight, engaging in a range of professional and technical planning activities. This includes conducting research and analysis on proposed modifications to the master plan, as well as preparing and delivering various staff reports and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Formulate comprehensive long-term land use strategies and policies for the City, engaging with stakeholders and analyzing trends to compile information into a cohesive written plan.
  2. Act as a representative for the City at various meetings, including the Neighborhood Advisory Board and Regional Planning Commission, while also preparing annual reports that outline the Planning Commission's activities in relation to the regional plan.
  3. Provide assistance to developers, the public, and other stakeholders through inquiries regarding land development and zoning regulations.
  4. Conduct field assessments of proposed developments to ensure adherence to code requirements.
  5. Draft and present recommendations for text amendments to the Planning Commission and City Council.
  6. Support the development of GIS data, maintaining the GIS database with updates on land use and zoning, and generating maps for staff reports.
  7. Compile statistical reports to aid in planning decisions.
  8. Propose and evaluate alternatives to address planning challenges and achieve objectives.
  9. Review building permits and planning proposals, ensuring compliance with zoning ordinances and policies.
  10. Coordinate with multiple City departments to ensure timely reviews and clear communication of comments.
  11. Analyze requests for amendments to the master plan and zoning changes, ensuring alignment with applicable laws and regulations.
  12. Serve as a liaison among applicants, consultants, and staff regarding necessary data and required studies.
  13. Communicate effectively with developers about policies related to development and prepare reports for decision-making bodies.
  14. Respond to public inquiries with professionalism, providing information and resolving complaints efficiently.
  15. Participate in professional meetings to stay updated on trends and innovations in planning.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of community planning operations and the principles of urban development. A Bachelor’s degree in urban/regional planning or a related field is preferred, along with relevant experience in urban or regional planning.

Physical and Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in an office environment with occasional travel for field assessments. The role involves physical activities such as standing, sitting, and operating office equipment.
