In this pivotal role, you will assist the Deputy Laboratory Director for Operations and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in steering the development and execution of strategic initiatives, policies, and operational duties.
Collaborating closely with various programmatic sectors of the laboratory, you will enhance world-class operational support that aligns with the scientific objectives of the laboratory.
Your responsibilities will include engaging stakeholders, clarifying requirements, and executing assigned laboratory-wide initiatives. You will act on behalf of the Deputy Laboratory Director and COO during their absence, serving as a delegate for authorized approvals.
Additionally, you will provide strategic budgetary support for the COO's endorsement, ensuring the efficient delivery of necessary services that align with the SLAC mission.
Your role will involve fostering innovation and continuous improvement throughout the laboratory complex while developing and nurturing relationships with the Department of Energy, Stanford University, and other stakeholders to formulate cross-cutting programs and solutions.
Possessing strong listening and consulting skills, you will engage with a diverse range of stakeholders to identify and resolve operational challenges through multidisciplinary teams.
Furthermore, you will advocate for talent management strategies that promote a diverse and inclusive workforce.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Providing strategic leadership and management of administrative and operational functions, exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions.
- Overseeing the management of your areas of responsibility, directing staff to achieve organizational goals and vision.
- Responsible for hiring, retaining staff, career coaching, and personal development for direct reports, while being accountable for employee performance.
- Setting strategic direction for multiple business areas, creating complex strategic plans, and managing the implementation of significant programmatic changes.
- Making critical decisions for programs that support the Laboratory and overseeing resource allocation.
- Evaluating organizational performance and developing plans for improvement, ensuring financial viability and success.
- Advising executive management on programmatic and policy development while negotiating with Laboratory leaders on impactful issues.
- Championing major initiatives and leading complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects.
To excel in this position, you will bring:
- A Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience in administrative, operational, and financial management, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, and change management capabilities.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with advanced financial expertise in budget planning and forecasting.
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and political acumen skills, with the ability to influence, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.

Knowledge of typical Laboratory Operations functions such as safety, security, facilities, human resources, business systems, and contractor assurance.
Ability to lead and manage Laboratory Operations projects and initiatives while balancing DOE regulatory and policy requirements.
Knowledge of the DOE national laboratory environment and the Department of Energy is highly preferred.

This level of knowledge and skill would typically be achieved through advanced formal education at the master's level or above, along with a minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level clearance is preferred.
