Job Title: Accounting Coordinator

Charlottesville City Schools is seeking a highly skilled Accounting Coordinator to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Accounting Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the general ledger, processing financial transactions, payroll, and financial reporting. This role will work under the general supervision of the Director of Finance and will be responsible for implementing GASB standards and maintaining schedules or preparing general journal entries.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supports and works in the time and attendance system.
  • Performs payroll processing duties, including error checks, payroll deposit file, post payroll, payroll encumbrances, and payroll voids.
  • Responsible for processing, reconciling, and payment of payroll-related bills, including child support, garnishments, optional life insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, Virginia Retirement System (VRS) retirement, health savings account, etc.
  • Prepares the quarterly and annual payroll reports, including 941s, Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), VA ST-16, and W-2s.
  • Monitors Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements and implements GASB standards as applicable to the school division financial statements.
  • Assists with the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Report.
  • Prepares work papers and other analyses to support year-end closing and audit process, including reconciliation of 941 reports corresponding to the fiscal year to the general ledger wages, compensated absences, fixed assets, and payroll accruals.
  • Maintains the school division's fixed assets accounting system.
  • Analyzes and reconciles periodic trial balances, including reconciling sub-ledger to the general ledger, verifying asset and equity balances, and researching/correcting discrepancies.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, business, or public administration.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of experience or training.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driver's permit.
