Job Summary

The Unit Secretary position plays a vital role in the delivery of quality care, communicating and scheduling physician orders, and relaying patients' requests and needs to the nursing and ancillary staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate and coordinate physician orders, entering all appropriate nursing orders into PowerChart and maintaining paper chart order.
  • Maintain supplies, prepare reports, and maintain unit records under the direction of the charge nurse or department manager.
  • Assist and prioritize non-clinical aspects of admission, discharges, and transfers of patients, including hospital-to-hospital transfers via ground transport, helicopter, and air ambulance.
  • Maintain patient records by entering data according to the Healthcare System's policy and procedures, preserving confidentiality, checking for deficiencies, and providing forms as necessary.
  • Answer patient call lights promptly and courteously, notifying the appropriate caregiver of the patient's needs.
  • Receive physicians, visitors, and ancillary staff, assisting them when possible, including referring them to other departments or units within the NCH Healthcare System.
  • Perform errands as necessary, including obtaining and returning supplies to Central Supply, Pharmacy, Lab, Dietary, etc.
Requirements
  • Minimum of High School or GED required.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
