The Rail Systems Engineer position at the Utah Transit Authority presents a remarkable opportunity to engage with advanced rail technologies, including Positive Train Control and overhead catenary systems. Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee system engineering tasks related to all rail systems, which encompass signals, stray current, traction power, Positive Train Control (PTC), and overhead catenary systems.
  • Examine as-built documentation and align it with actual field conditions.
  • Develop modifications for existing systems and guide their implementation in the field.
  • Contribute technical expertise in the formulation and evaluation of project design criteria and design activities, including design reviews, submittal assessments, factory acceptance testing, field installations, and enhancements for rail signal, traction power, and overhead catenary systems.
  • Generate technical reports, cost projections, and timelines as necessary.
  • Collaborate with contracted personnel for systems-related initiatives and work closely with other departments to achieve collaborative solutions.
  • Manage and report on Positive Train Control progress as mandated by regulatory authorities, including the oversight of PTC-recorded events requiring closure and reporting.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of additional systems-related reports and analyses as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project design, development, construction, maintenance, testing, and implementation of rail systems and rail signal fields, with a preference for two years of proven expertise in managing engineering projects, especially in railroad or rail transit contexts.
  • At least one year of demonstrated progressive competence in leadership roles.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A valid driver's license with no more than four moving violations in the past three years; no more than one violation for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs within the last decade.
Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive understanding of train control, traction power substations (TPSS), overhead contact systems (OCS), PTC, and related systems, along with industry practices and trends.
  • Theoretical knowledge of electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems relevant to signals, TPSS, OCS, and PTC evaluations.
  • Proficiency in electronic, electrical, and mechanical testing, safety, and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Familiarity with word processing and data analysis; knowledge of databases is advantageous.
