PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The role involves overseeing the operation and maintenance of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority's (MWRA) disinfection, corrosion control, hydroelectric, and throttling valve facilities during assigned shifts.
SUPERVISION:
Operates under the general guidance of the Senior Transmission and Treatment Operator.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No supervisory duties are assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts operational tasks at critical transmission and treatment facilities.
- Travels to various facilities as required to implement operational adjustments or to address alarms.
- Manages turbine operations, synchronizes and halts generators, and handles circuit breakers and disconnect switches related to power feeders.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks, including the inspection and lubrication of generator and turbine bearings.
- Assists in the repair of generators, turbines, transformers, circuit breakers, exciters, water and electric meters, relays, motorized valves, sluice gates, and other related equipment, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
- Adjusts chemical feed mechanisms and calibrates chemical pumps under the direction of the Senior Operator.
- Monitors bulk chemical inventory and may assist in the inspection of chemical deliveries following established procedures.
- Conducts measurements of pH, temperature, alkalinity, fluoride, and chlorine levels in both raw and treated water according to standard operating procedures.
- Calibrates critical treatment process control analyzers for temperature, pH, chlorine, and alkalinity.
- Supports the Senior Operator with daily maintenance tasks on chemical feed systems, including purging lines, rotating pumps, and testing emergency equipment.
- Monitors SCADA systems for operational performance, acknowledges alarms, records chemical feed rates, and logs relevant data into databases.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Basic literacy, numeracy, and communication skills typically acquired through a high school education or equivalent.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a water treatment, hydroelectric, or power generation environment; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of the operation, maintenance, and repair of power systems, including hydroelectric generators and associated equipment.
- Familiarity with electrical circuits, testing protocols, and preventative maintenance practices.
- Ability to interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams.
- Capacity to identify operational issues and equipment defects to prevent failures.
- Proficient in maintaining logs and preparing operational and maintenance reports.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License.
- A valid Massachusetts Grade II Treatment-Operator-in-training or Distribution Operator-in-training license.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Utilizes hand tools, mobile radios, telephones, personal computers (including SCADA systems), and various office equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires physical capabilities that may include using hands for manipulation, occasional sitting, standing, and walking, and frequent climbing or balancing. The employee may need to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds regularly and occasionally lift more than 25 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment may include office settings, outdoor conditions, and proximity to moving mechanical parts. Employees may encounter wet or humid conditions, vibrations, and potential exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
