Job Title: Senior Nuclear Nonproliferation Specialist

Requisition ID: 13176

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory with an 80-year history of solving the nation's biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people, and our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization.

We are seeking a Senior Nuclear Nonproliferation Specialist who will focus on existing nuclear nonproliferation fuel cycle research. The candidate chosen for this position will be the principal investigator (PI) for fuel cycle research focusing on threat analysis, domain analysis, and generating sponsor reports.

This position resides in the Material Security and Counterproliferation Group in the Material Modeling & Characterization Division, Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, National Security Sciences Directorate, at ORNL.

This position will also collect, review, analyze, collate, and briefings pertaining to specific nuclear fuel cycle topics to further research efforts.

This position supports technical exchanges with foreign counterparts as necessary, and is responsible for integrating the collected raw information with an existing classified electronic document management system (EDMS) based on the OpenText DM software for archival purposes.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Work in conjunction with the portfolio manager to ensure seamless integration within the larger effort.
  • Work directly with the sponsor to ensure that the targeted reports meet sponsor's needs and expectations.
  • Develop new tools and use an existing collection of collection tools to ingest large volumes of raw information from all sources.
  • Collate and organize the raw information into an existing EDMS framework.
  • Author analytical products.
  • Present the analytical products both internally and externally in a variety of formats.
  • Assist the overall program manager with representing this body of work both internally and externally.

All team members deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in nuclear engineering, nuclear chemical engineering, or a related field and eight (8) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of skills and experience may be considered.
  • Experience and familiarity with broad aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Experience providing on-call technical service.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Must possess excellent problem-solving skills and be capable of working with substantial amounts of data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and organizational management skills.
  • Certification and/or advanced degree in nuclear or chemical engineering.
  • Familiarity with business software used in this type of work.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy.

As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.

Benefits at ORNL:

ORNL offers competitive pay and benefits programs to attract and retain talented people. The laboratory offers many employee benefits, including medical and retirement plans and flexible work hours, to help you and your family live happy and healthy.

Employee amenities such as on-site fitness, banking, and cafeteria facilities are also provided for convenience.

  • Prescription Drug Plan, Dental Plan, Vision Plan, 401(k) Retirement Plan, Contributory Pension Plan, Life Insurance, Disability Benefits, Generous Vacation and Holidays, Parental Leave, Legal Insurance with Identity Theft Protection, Employee Assistance Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, Health Savings Accounts, Wellness Programs, Educational Assistance, Relocation Assistance, and Employee Discounts.
