Position Overview:

The Corrections Nursing Specialist plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive nursing care to individuals in custody, ensuring their health and safety within a secure environment. This position involves daily interactions with both adult and juvenile populations, delivering both routine and emergency medical services in the Medical and Ambulatory sectors of the facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employs the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients/inmates.
  • Facilitates referrals to healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, and mental health experts.
  • Observes and identifies physiological and psychosocial changes in patients, promptly reporting findings to the RN or physician.
  • Collaborates with the RN to adjust care plans based on ongoing evaluations and the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient responses to interventions and treatments.
  • Ensures a safe and effective environment by monitoring equipment and surroundings.
  • Engages in infection control measures as directed by the Infection Control Coordinator or nursing supervisor.
  • Contributes to the orientation and ongoing education of facility staff as needed.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives related to health services.
  • Adheres to all facility policies and procedures, maintaining compliance with security protocols regarding tools and access.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Practical Nursing License in the relevant state.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a corrections environment is preferred.
  • Adherence to all applicable professional standards of practice.
  • Completion of Amergis' Competency program when required.
  • Current CPR certification, if applicable.
  • Completion of TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray as necessary.
  • Current health certificate as mandated by contract or state regulations.
  • Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Successful completion of new hire training specific to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in computer skills is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
