The Corrections Nursing Specialist engages closely with individuals in custody, delivering both routine and urgent medical care within the Medical and Ambulatory sectors of the Corrections Facility while upholding security protocols.

Shift: Nights | Hours: 36 hours per week

Contract: 8-13 weeks with potential for extension, Full-time position

Required Certifications: LPN, BLS

Locations: Various facilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employs the nursing process to assess, implement, and evaluate care for patients/inmates.
  • Facilitates referrals to medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, and mental health specialists.
  • Observes and reports any physiological or psychosocial changes in patients' conditions to the RN or physician.
  • Collaborates with RNs to adjust care plans based on evaluations and nursing interventions.
  • Records patients' responses to nursing actions and other interventions.
  • Ensures the safety and functionality of the environment and medical equipment.
  • Engages in infection control measures as directed by the Infection Control Coordinator or nursing supervisor.
  • Contributes to the orientation and ongoing education of staff as needed.
  • Participates in the Health Quality Improvement Program as required.
  • Adheres to all facility policies and procedures.
  • Follows security protocols regarding tools and equipment management.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current Practical Nursing License in the relevant state.
  • Preferred: At least one year of experience in a corrections environment.
  • Compliance with all applicable professional standards of practice.
  • Completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable.
  • Current CPR certification as required.
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray as necessary.
  • Current Health certificate in accordance with contract or state regulations.
  • Meets all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training relevant to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Computer literacy is essential.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
